Your Next Customer Might Be an AI Agent. Is Your Marketing Ready?

For most of marketing history, the audience has been obvious: people. We build creative for people, landing pages for people, offers for people, and customer journeys around the behaviors we expect people to take. That assumption is starting to break.

A new advertising experiment reported by Business Insider is testing what happens when the audience is not a person at all, but an AI agent. Adtech company Mobian has worked with publishers including Time on “Agent Ads,” text-based branded content designed to be read by AI crawlers and agents. The goal is straightforward: improve the information AI systems encounter when they research a company, product, or category on a user’s behalf.

This is bigger than another SEO tactic

It would be easy to file this under AEO, GEO, or whatever acronym wins the naming war around optimization for AI search. I think that misses the bigger shift. Marketers are beginning to operate in a world where software can become part of the addressable audience.

An AI agent may research a product, compare competitors, summarize reviews, evaluate price, and eventually transact for a customer. If that behavior scales, the traditional funnel changes. A brand may need to persuade a machine before it ever gets the chance to persuade the human using it.

The lifecycle implication is easy to underestimate

Lifecycle teams usually inherit the customer after acquisition. We think about onboarding, activation, repeat purchase, subscription retention, cross-sell, loyalty, and winback. But machine-mediated discovery could push CRM teams further upstream because the data we maintain about customers and products may become part of what makes a brand understandable to agents.

Clean product data, clear pricing, transparent subscription terms, strong reviews, consistent brand claims, structured FAQs, and useful public content all become more valuable when an agent is trying to decide whether your product belongs in a recommendation set.

The new question for marketers

For years we have asked, “What does the customer need to see next?” We may soon need to ask a second question: “What does the customer’s agent need to know?” Those are not necessarily the same thing.

The brands that adapt first will not be the ones stuffing marketing copy into pages for bots. They will be the ones making their value proposition, product information, policies, reputation, and customer experience legible enough that both humans and machines can understand why they deserve consideration.

That is a much more interesting future than simply optimizing another channel. It means the definition of an audience itself is changing.
